Do you have a Rat Problem in your Home?

The Rentokil Pest Control experts are here to help you spot the signs of a possible rat infestation and identify the health risks that rats pose.

Watch out for the following warning signs of a possible rat infestation:

1. Damage caused by rats:

A rat infestation means damage to cables

Rats have teeth that grow continuously and gnaw on wood and plastic to keep their incisors down to size.

Did you know that rats can even cause fires by chewing through cables? A rat infestation always means an immediate danger to electrical systems.

  • Damage to cables and electrical equipment (including short-circuits and fire hazards)
  • Rodent damage to furnishings, files, etc.
  • Chips in paved and concrete surfaces as a result of unhindered subversive activity of rats

2. Ripped food packaging:

Rats contaminate food and pose health risks

Did you know that approximately 25% of all food produced is destroyed or rendered unfit due to contamination caused by pests?

Rodents, especially rats, contaminate food products with their faeces and urine. Rats will also tear open food packaging which may leave teeth marks, and will consume only part of the product, leaving the remainder unfit for human consumption.

Other typical signs of a rat infestation are:

  • Scratching noises in walls or under the floor as rats scurry around
  • Droppings; rats leave dark, tapered droppings of about 10-14mm long
  • Distinctive smell; rats leave an ammonia-like smell that will be particularly strong in enclosed areas such as under cupboards
  • Nests; rats build nests in warm, hidden places using shredded material such as newspaper and fabrics
  • Burrows; in gardens, rats will dig burrows especially in compost heaps or under sheds and build nests under garden decking.

It is important to understand the effects a rat infestation can have on your home and family:

Rats spread diseases that pose serious health risks

Rats pose a health risk because they can transmit dangerous diseases to humans.

The bacteria and viruses contained in rats’ excreta (faeces, urine, and saliva) can be transmitted to humans via skin contact, absorption through the mucus membranes or inhalation into the respiratory tract, all leading to disease.

In addition, rats act as so-called “vessels” whereby they transmit disease causing pathogens through the parasites - such as ticks or fleas – which they carry with them.

Rodents can transmit the following diseases to humans:

  • Weil's jaundice (leptospirosis)
  • By trichinosis trichinosis (nematodes)
  • Salmonellosis caused by Salmonella bacteria
  • Spotted fever (typhoid) and Partatyphus
  • Tapeworm (Hymenlepisarten)
  • Amoebic dysentery g1e by Euramoeba (protozoa)
  • Rabies
  • By rat fever Ricketsia bacteria
  • Tuberculosis
  • Introduction of parasites
