Cockroach Poison and Traps

Do you have a cockroach infestation in your home?

Cockroach poison

Once you have spotted the signs of a cockroach infestation, you need to take actions to prevent the infestation from becoming an even larger a problem. Please note that in order to get rid of cockroaches one must employ basic housekeeping activities. For instance, removing all available sources of food and water, ensuring all food residues and spillages are cleaned away and left-over food are stored away in containers. Read more about the actions you can take to prevent and get rid of cockroaches in your home.

First of all, cockroach traps or commercially available insect repellent do not offer much help in completely eliminating a cockroach infestation. A cockroach trap consists of a glue strip which traps the cockroach by attaching them to the surface. This type of cockroach trap proves most useful in monitoring the extent of a cockroach infestation.

Furthermore, the use of DIY pesticides can prove to be dangerous and cause respiratory problems. The following are different cockroach poison products we have available:

Cockroach Flushing Agents:

In order to identify the source of the cockroach infestation, and prior to performing the general treatment, our cockroach control experts may make use of flushing agents to determine the source of active harborages. This flushing agent is in the form of an aerosol spray, which is applied to walls, skirting boards, cupboards and surfaces where cockroaches have been spotted. Only a very minute amount is applied to flush out potential insects.

Cockroach Bait:

Our technicians place the cockroach poison in the areas where the infestation is most prominent; such as cracks, crevices, around skirting boards and equipment (behind refrigerators, sinks, counters) as well as around sensitive areas such as electrical equipment.

Cockroach Bait

This type of cockroach bait is usually applied in gel format and contains a stomach poison that is ingested by cockroaches. Due to the consistency of the gel, it is easily attached to the cockroach’s body and then carried back to their harborages and nesting areas. As cockroaches are cannibals one of the advantages of this approach is that any cockroaches that eat a poisoned cockroach will also be poisoned.

In general, a significant reduction in the cockroach infestation is usually achieved after 7 days. Complete eradication usually takes 2-3 weeks. However, the success of cockroach control is also dependent on whether the cockroach bait gel reaches the eggs in the affected areas. Depending on the development cycle of the different types of cockroaches, a final result takes place after a few months, due to the number of hidden eggs spared from the effects of the cockroach poison.

In the case of the German cockroach, the remaining larva survives 2-3 months, although the Oriental cockroach’s larvae can survive for at least 6 months. Only then can it be determined whether one’s home is completely rid of cockroaches.

Rentokil accompanies this process by performing repeated treatments and cockroach infestation surveys.

Advantages of cockroach bait:

  • High level of adhesion and long duration of the gel action
  • The second stage of the cockroach bait gel ensures that a multiplier effect takes place through cannibalism
  • No pollution, no large-scale use of pesticides needed.
  • Good level of control and precise application, even on vertical surfaces, in the vicinity of suspected cockroach activity
  • Easy removal of the cockroach gel to prevent against possible damage.

This type of cockroach gel is odourless and non-invasive, and as it is applied in small dosages (approximately 5ml on any given area) it is not a danger to humans or pets.

Cockroach Traps

Cockroach Trap

In order to monitor the level of cockroach infestation, cockroach traps will be placed in areas such as your kitchen, living room, bathroom etc to ensure the correct level of control is exercised and to determine the progress of removing cockroaches in your home. These cockroach traps contain cockroach pheromones that attract the cockroach to the trap.

If untreated, a cockroach infestation will spread to neighbouring properties. It is extremely difficult to reach all cockroach hiding places with amateur products. Cockroach infestations are likely to re-occur, especially when surviving cockroach eggs hatch after one or two months.
