Grey Squirrels

  • The Grey Squirrel is 35 – 53cm in length and 550 – 750g in weight.
  • The Grey Squirrel has grey-brown fur colour, hence its’ name.


  • These squirrels breed in summer and again in winter
  • They have 1 – 2 litters per annum, with 1 – 5 young per litter.
  • Grey Squirrels are commonly found in mixed broadleaf/conifer woodland. In the autumn, they are found in hedgerows, gardens and fields away from woods.
  • Females life for up to 4 – 6 years, where males life for 2 – 3 years.


  • Grey squirrels are found in hedgerows, banking, woods, gardens, farms etc.
  • They damage tree bark, particularly sycamore/beech
  • The Grey Squirrel is indigenous to North America where it is reaching pest proportions. It has no legal protection in Uganda and is classified as a pest.
