Field Vole

  • The length of the head and body of a field vole varies from 8 - 13 cm, with its weight ranging from 14g to 50g.
  • Field voles have grey–brown fur with pale grey under–parts.
  • The field vole has small eyes and ears, and has a short tail.


  • Field voles breed during March to October.
  • Female field voles produce 4 to 6 young in litters of 10 – 15, after a gestation period of 18 to 20 days.
  • These types of mice can live for up to two years.


  • Field voles inhabit grassland, meadows and marshland, feeding mainly on green leaves and grasses.
  • In the summer, they are generally nocturnal. However in the winter when food is scarce, they also appear during the day.
