  • The Solitary bee’s appearance is often similar to that of the honey bee.


  • Colony size: small bee hives which are individually tended by a female.
  • Preferred nest sites: often in soil, sometimes in soft cement and mortar between bricks.
  • Nest construction: the Solitary bee utilises various materials, and usually creates a new bee hive each year.


  • Swarming: the Solitary bee does not swarm.
  • Overwintering: usually in the pupal stage within the nest.
  • Food preferences: the Solitary bee prefers honey and pollen.
  • The Solitary bee rarely stings.
