Bluebottle or Blowfly (Calliphora vomitoria)
  • The adult Blue bottle fly is 6 - 12mm length and is metallic blue in colour.
  • The larva of the Blue bottle fly is similar to the House Fly larva in all aspects, except for its size, for which it is larger than the larvae of the House Fly.


  • The eggs of a Blue Bottle Fly hatch 0 – 18 hrs (partial development may occur within the female).
  • Larvae take 7 – 12 days to mature.


  • Blue bottle flies breed in mostly meat derived substances, and sometimes in cheese.
  • The Blue bottle fly is the common pest of dead rodents/birds etc.
