  • The German cockroach is 12 – 15mm in length.
  • It is brown with two dark stripes on its thorax.
  • The wings of German cockroaches are as long as the body, or slightly overlapping in both sexes.
  • The German cockroach runs and climbs, and has sticky pads on the feet.


  • Female German Cockroaches carry 35 - 40 eggs in an ootheca (egg case) until they are ready to hatch.
  • Eggs hatch within 1 month, which then develop in nymphs.
  • Nymphs develop into adults after 6 weeks to 6 months.


  • German Cockroaches prefer high temperatures and humidities, and seek harborage in heated buildings, often kitchens and ships.
  • German cockroaches are nocturnal – meaning they are active at night.
  • These cockroaches are omnivorous, and will eat anything from food lying around in kitchens, to waste, books and leather.
