American Cockroach
  • The American cockroach is 28 – 44 mm in length
  • They are shiny red–brown in colour.
  • The wings of the male American cockroach are longer than the body, whereas the female’s wings only overlap the abdomen.
  • The American cockroach prefers to run (it may fly at very high temperatures).


  • The ootheca (egg case) of the American cockroach contains 6 – 28 eggs and is carried by the female for several days before being deposited. Sometimes the eggs are cemented down and tend to be grouped.
  • Eggs hatch between 1 - 2 months, and then develop into nymphs.
  • Nymphs usually develop in 5 months, but it can take up to 15 months.


  • American cockroaches are mainly found inside buildings, drains, basements, pipe ducts and risers.
  • American cockroaches are nocturnal, and are only seen during evenings.
  • This type of cockroach is omnivorous and will eat almost anything.
